British Nigerian Tech guru and educator,Tom Ilube named Britain's Most Powerful Black Person

British Nigerian Tech guru and founder of the trailblazing African Science Academy, Tom Ilube was yesterday, October 25, named the most influential black person on the UK....many years after he was rejected for a graduate trainee scheme at McDonald's for "not being good enough"

The 53-year-old philanthropist topped Powerlist 2017, the annual list of the 100 most powerful people of African and African Caribbean heritage in Britain.

Ilube claimed the number one spot for his outstanding work in education where he has demonstrably impacted thousands of lives and for his success in launching several successful technology companies. He set up the charity, African Gifted Foundation, to help transform the lives of hundreds of children on the continent.

Born in Isleworth, west London to an English mother and Nigerian father, Ilube spent his formative years bouncing between the UK, Uganda, and his dad’s country of birth. One of five siblings, he claims he was never the standout star among them. His "incredibly smart” elder brother, who recently died, studied chemistry at Oxford. His youngest brother, “easily the cleverest of the bunch”, sat his A-levels aged 15. Ilube himself did his first degree, in physics, at the University of Benin, Nigeria, and later an MBA at Cass Business School in London. He says his time in Nigeria solidified his ambitious nature.

"Nigeria is a very pushy, ambitious place with a you-can-try-anything sort of mindset,” he says. "And I think I absorbed some of that. I had a lot of that anyway, so when I came back [to Britain] I was in that mindset to achieve."Earlier this year, he opened the African Science Academy (ASA), Africa’s first girls-only science and technology school, based in Ghana with young women scientists attending from six countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Uganda. The academy is driving Africa's development by inspiring and unleashing the next generation of gifted scientists and engineers and hopes to admit over 200 students a year from across the continent. Reflecting on his achievements with ASA, Ilube said:

"Launching the African Science Academy is the highlight of all my work in education over the past decade. I am convinced that we have brilliant young women in African who have the potential to be tomorrow's world class scientists and engineers."Ilube is also the Founder and CEO of Crossword Cybersecurity plc and was part of the founding team of pioneering internet bank Egg where he was Chief Information Officer and he persuaded Sir Tim Berners Lee to serve as an adviser to his company Garlik.

IIube founded Hammersmith Academy, which opened in September 2011 and has gone on to become one of the UK’s most innovative technology schools. After he was rejected for a graduate trainee scheme at McDonald's for not being good enough. He sent applications to every company starting with the letter A and was turned down again and again, so he started working through the Bs and ended up working for British Airways as a programmer. From there, he headed to the London Stock Exchange in the 1980s, where he was one of few black professionals. He was conscious of this status, but not intimidated.

"I think being thrown into different environments – Nigeria, Uganda, back to the UK, off again, and back again – sort of made me quite resilient. I can go into new and different situations and not feel too daunted… I observe them with interest. Building a career in London, you would often go to places and be the only black person out of 200 people."Unveiling the Powerlist 2017, chosen by an independent panel of judges led by former High Court judge Dame Linda Dobbs, publisher Michael Eboda said:

"I’m incredibly proud of all of our Powerlistees this year and over the past 10 years in which we’ve published the magazine. Tom isn’t a household name, but quietly behind the scenes, he has had an incredible effect on the lives of so many people across the world.Winners were honoured last night at the third annual Powerlist Influencers Dinner, a black-tie event sponsored by EY, which will be held at the Goldsmiths’s Hall. The keynote speech was delivered by Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Speaking at the event, Khan said it was important to "never forget the power of positive role models".

"I’ve seen time and time again the profound impact it can have when young people see high achievers who look like them and come from the same background. It spurs them on. It motivates them. And there is special moment when they realise that they too can succeed and fulfil their potential."

According to Powerlist spokesperson, entrants were judged on their “ability to change lives and alter events, as demonstrated over a protracted period of time and in a positive manner,"

The Powerlist 2016 Top Ten are:

1: Tom Ilube: Founder of Crosssword Cyber Security, Africa Gifted Foundation
2: Ric Lewis: Founder/Chief Executive/Chairman, Tristan Capital Partners
3:Arlene Isaacs-Lowe: Managing Director – Head of Relationship Management, EMEA, Moodys
4: Sir Lenny Henry: Actor, writer, campaigner
5: Mo Farah: Olympic Champion

Racism row: Samuel Eto'o dropped by Club over his Instagram post about not being respected 'because he's black'

Cameroon football star and former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o has been dropped by his club, Antalyaspor, after he claimed on social media that people didn't respect him because of his skin colour. According to AFP, the Turkish top flight said that Eto’o would be left out of the squad until further notice in a bitter row over comments on social media.

Two days ago, the football star, who moved to Antalyaspor in June 2015 posted a screenshot image of his achievement, all the cups he has won, along with a caption written in Turkish:
"Reminder – perhaps some people do not feel respect for me because I am black. But I am not going to come down from the level I have reached. I have been in this game for 18 years,"
The 35-year-old did not specify to whom he was targeting his criticism but later posted another message insisting it was not directed at Antalyaspor Chairman Ali Safak Öztürk. But Antalyaspor said in a terse statement on its website that a meeting of its board had decided to leave Eto’o out of the squad until further notice.

Turkish commentators had interpreted the remarks of Eto’o as a response to apparent criticism by Öztürk of his performance in the early season. The three-time Champions League winner has failed to lead his side to any kind of success with just one point from four matches
"No player is above the interests of Antalyaspor. Everyone must know their place," the chairman was quoted as saying." said Ozturk.

Make una leave Patience -Charly Boy

The latest unconfirmed gist heating up the social media is about former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who is spitting fire on EFCC for freezing her accounts containing about 6.3 billion Naira, claiming that she is being deprived of her right to her hard-earned money. Yes o, however you wan look am, she worked for that money!

Why are people suddenly upset? Isn't it the same Naija people who have been shouting, "bring back our corruption", since the country slipped into recession? Dia ris God ooooo!!!

Since 1978 or so, we have been living on corruption money, and hailing the thieves. Haba Naija, I tire for una. Abegi make we hear word and make we read something useful on this social highway. Una dey provoke say dem see billions for Mama Peace account.

And so?

When will we ever learn? Yes, a country deserves the kind of leadership it gets because those who rule us are from amongst us, they are not from Ghana or Togo. How many times will we let a thief into our house? The first time should be enough. The second time, lets take that as one chance. The third time means we are stupid. If we, the followers are not like our leaders, why haven't we done anything to stop the looting of our resources??

Countries that don’t have brave youths, prosecutors, fearless judges, good policing and fearless citizens will instead, have plenty of thieves, many killers and even stupid leaders. Since we have settled for people deceiving people and it has become our way of life let's roll over and die or accept everything we see that assaults our intelligence and impoverish us.

Wetin???

For if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them?

We have been living on corruption money long before now and we didn't care.

I know that looters will be looted, while time and tide will make most of us mercenaries . For long, our leaders have used deception and misdirection as their tools. We don’t believe in hard work, when a false face and a good line of bullshit can do so much more.

As for us the masses, we are all waiting for our turn to steal something from some place, Kai, our mumu is vexing me joor.

So how can we effectively create this new dawn when most of us are all guilty.

Now Baba has come to fight corruption, but I can swear that he is alone in this fight. Because most of the people in his kitchen are corrupt. Yes o.

Till there are grave consequences for people who break the law, people who steal public funds, known corrupt people who are till today in leadership positions, nothing will change. This too will come to pass and nothing go happen. Dem go settle, and back to business as usual.

Has anyone one been thrown into prison since this war on corruption started? My people, abegi, make we use our brain.

I just pray that one day one day, there will be no hiding place for people who ruined this country.

For those who took what they didn't earn, may judgement await them! It is only from then that things will begin to truly change.

The injustices stink...tufiakwa!!!

I don talk my own sha.

Despite the size of my group, I need 38 visas to move around Africa- Aliko Dangote

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote says despite the large size of his group, he still requires to have 38 visas to move around the African continent. In an interview with CNBC, Dangote said African leaders need to work to remove barriers such as visa issuance so that businesses can effectively connect and thrive within the continent.

''Our leaders must give incentives. For example, little things like visa issuance. You go to a country that is looking for investment, that particular country will give you a run around just to get a visa. You have to know somebody who is big in that country to call somebody. They are giving you visas as if it is a favour.
Somebody like me, despite the size of our group, I need 38 visas to move around Africa. Yes, I’ve heard that they are going to do the (African) passport, but you can see that there is still a little bit of resistance from other African leaders. Even countries like Rwanda and co, that say no visas for Africans, they are still having problems getting visas into other African countries, despite saying no need for visas for Africans coming in. They say, just come, we would give you on arrival”he said
