The Fajuyi Spirit - By Femi Fani-Kayode

Read his piece below...

Fifty years ago today, on July 29th 1966, a man by the name of Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi gave his life in defence of our country and the then Head of State, General Johnson Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi. His killers were a group of northern army officers who participated in the so-called northern "revenge coup" of July 29th 1966. No less than 300 Igbo army officers were slaughtered that night together with a handful of yoruba soldiers, including Fajuyi.
Major General Fajuyi was a yoruba man who opted to die in defence of an igbo Head of State. This was not only honorable and courageous but it was also unique and unprecedented. He was a selfless hero and a man that we shall honor and immortalise in the new Nigeria that is to come.

Those that murdered him, General Aguiyi-Ironsi and the famous 300 in cold blood that night are still running the affairs of our country till today. They determine who is who and who gets what. They decide who our President will be and how long he will remain in power. As a matter of fact their hateful hegemony and evil intentions are even more pronounced and frightful today than they were in 1966 and their grip on the levers of power in our country is even stronger.

Today they are fully in charge and some of those that actually shot Fajuyi are fully behind them. Yet despite their intention to dominate, silence, break and destroy the rest of us one thing remains clear: the Fajuyi spirit of courage, unity, selflesness and sacrifice has been imbued by millions in the southern and Middle Belt regions of our country.

These are men and women that are prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with the oppressed of our nation, whether they be Niger Deltans, Igbos, Yorubas? Middle Belters or anything else. These are men and women that are prepared to resist the perfidious religious and ethnic agenda of the "born to rule" in our midst and that recognise the fact that they regard the rest of us as nothing but slaves. When it comes to southern rights and interests we the Yoruba particularly must learn a lesson from our own son Fajuyi and emulate his example.

Like him, if necessary, we must be ready to sacrifice our lives and liberty in defence of any or all of our southern and Middle Belt bretheren that are facing persecution, genocide and injustice at the hands of our collective slave masters. It is also time for us to appreciate the fact that if we truly want to be free we must extend our hand of friendship across the River Niger to the Igbo and we must see their bitter travails as being ours as well.

We must also feel the pain when an Igbo or Niger-Deltan youth is slaughtered by President Buhari's army in the name of "crushing all opposition and dissent" and "keeping Nigeria one". We must also feel the pain when an Igbo or Niger-Deltan youth is slaughtered by President Buhari's army in the name of "crushing all opposition and dissent" and "keeping Nigeria one".

We must acknowledge the fact that Nigeria cannot remain one as long as there is ethnic and religious bigotry, oppression and injustice. We must appreciate the fact that there can never be southern, or indeed Middle Belt, emancipation without southern unity. Fajuyi understood that point 50 years ago. Consequently he opted to resist the evil in the and and die for it. He was indeed a true martyr. He paid the supreme price for his fellow southerner and he stood against northern adventurism, oppression, domination and hegemony. 50 years later it is time for the rest of us to do the same.

It is time for us to acknowledge and honor his sacrifice and come together as one. It is time for us to stand up, look at our collective oppressors in the eye and say "no more". No longer should we bow our heads in submission, servility and shame. It is time for us to rise up, invoke the power of the Living God and be men. May the gallant and beautiful soul of Major General Fajuyi continue to rest in eternal peace and may those that murdered him 50 years ago be brought to justice.

Restaurant owner is forced to eat cockroach found in customer's food

The restaurant owner
A customer who ordered fried noodles from a restaurant in Changsha, Hunan province, China on July 25th, forced the restaurant's owner to eat a cockroach he said he found in his food.
After the customer found the supposed cockroach, he told the restaurant owner to either eat the cockroach or pay him 5,000 yuan (£569).
The owner ate the cockroach instead. But the customer wasn't a man of his word, as he kept demanding money from the owner, adding that he needed to be compensated financially for the bad experience he had, but the owner refused to give in to the customer's demands.

According to the owner and other customers, the restaurant had been running for 11 years and had never encountered problems like this.

Some workers at the restaurant claimed that they thought they were being blackmailed by the customer. One worker even fought tears while she talked to reporters who came to interview them, saying she was upset that her boss had been forced to eat the insect.

After the incident, o n July 26, the Food and Drug Administration visited the restaurant for an inspection and discovered that the restaurant was using outdated equipment and did not have the necessary means to rid the establishment of flies or rats.

The FDA then ordered the restaurant to close for five days so that they could make the necessary changes.

Indian man who 'died' from snake bite wakes up seconds before cremation and dies again (Graphic photos)

A 23 year old Indian man simply identified as Sandeep, who was presumed dead after being bitten by a snake rose up from the dead at his own funeral, just as his body was about to be cremated.
Sandeep, was bitten by a snake while collecting wood from the forest far from his village. When he got back to his village in the Raisen district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, he told his family that he had been bitten by a snake.

Rather than take him to a hospital for treatment, his family took him to a traditional tantric practitioner in a nearby village, hoping that traditional medicine would cure him but the traditional cure didn't seem to have healed Sandeep, so they assumed he had died.

The family took his body to a local cemetery, where a funeral pyre was prepared. They placed his body and lit the fire, but by the time the fire almost reached his body, the young man started screaming, that was when people realised that he was still alive.

After he regained consciousness, his family took him to that same tantric practitioner who had previously declared him dead, instead of taking him to the hospital.

Again. the tantric couldn't save him and declared Sandeep dead for the second time.

He was then taken to the district hospital where he was confirmed dead and a post-mortem examination was done.

Brazilian drug lord serves his time in a 'VIP cell' that had a library, plasma TV, 3 rooms and an en-suite bathroom

A Brazilian drug lord serving an eight-year prison sentence, spent his time behind bars in a 'VIP cell' - complete with a plasma television, a kitchen, wardrobes, conference room, air conditioning, tiled walls, furniture, and library - complete with a DVD collection that included all episodes of a television show about Pablo Escobar.

Jarvis Chimenes Pavao, one of South America's deadliest and most feared drug lords was sentenced to 8 years in prison after being found guilty of money laundering charges and was locked up in Tacumb prison in Asuncion, Paraguay, where he lived a life of luxury. See more photos after the cut...

But Pavao's cushy life behind bars came to an end at his own doing, after officers began to suspect he was planning to detonate a bomb in order to smash through one of the jail walls and escape.

Investigators flooded the Brazilian's cell in search of the explosives on Tuesday night, but instead found his luxury prison pad.
After the raid, Pavao's lawyer said the lifestyle her client was able to lead while locked up was proof of how deeply corrupt the Paraguayan prison system had become.

'Six or seven justice ministers and six or seven prison directors' took bribes from Pavao, his lawyer alleged.
The lawyer also claimed her client paid for lodgings for prison directors, toilets for the guards, the renovation of the prison library and the cooks' salaries.
In the wake of the scandal, Justice Minister Carla Bacigalupo was sacked almost immediately.
Tacumbu penitentiary is considered one of the most overcrowded and violent jail of Paraguay - with inmates often starving to death or being involved in riots.

Wellness Tips: 5 menstrual symptoms to NEVER ignore

For some ladies, the monthly cycle is a time of unbearable pain/cramps while for some it's not such a big deal but these signs should never be ignored...

Ill-health, excess weight, stress, leading causes of menstrual irregularities - Gynaecologist (Ngrguardiannews)

Ladies have varying symptoms for the time of the month.

For some ladies, the monthly cycle is a time of unbearable pain/cramps while for some it's not such a big deal but in recent times while it's totally normal to observe few 'abnormal' signs due to hormonal/body changes at this time, some symptoms shouldn't be totally ignored as these symptoms may sometimes be a sign of an underlying health issue.
play

Women who begin their menstrual cycles early or late have been found to be at greater risk of heart disease or stroke. Photo for illustrative purposes only (Madame Noire)

1. Fever

Continuous high temperature is a symptom to monitor! Some ladies record a higher than normal temperature during the time of the month but it subsides especially when painkillers are used but when it doesn't and if there's a 'sickly' feeling it's time to see a physician to be sure it's not Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

2. Terrible/persistent cramps

Severe pains/unbearable menstrual cramps that painkillers won't offer relief to should be investigated as they may be a pointer to serious uterine issues.

3. Excessive bleeding

Heavy menstrual flow occurs in some ladies but in cases where tampons and sanitary towels have to be changed every thirty minutes then there's a problem as this could result in (excessive) blood loss which can cause dizziness or weakness amongst other things as well indicate an underlying health issue.

Applying little pressure with hot towel or hot water bottle helps to ease period pains(healthadvice4life)

4. Spotting in-between periods

Spotting in between periods is usually something not to be toyed with. When you're not on any pills and you spot in between periods then it's time for routine check as this could be an abnormalty in the cervix which when left untreated could result in cervical cancer.

5. Irregular Periods

Irregular periods may be caused by excessive stress and other factors but severe delay/irregular cases may be caused by hormonal imbalances and other health issues which shouldn't be ignored.

Substitute Chuba Akpom netted a late match-winner asArsenal saw off the MLS All-Stars 2-1 in San Jose on Thursday.

Akpom came off the bench past the hour-mark and he proved to be the difference, scoring from close range with three minutes remaining after big-money recruit Granit Xhaka made his debut for the Premier League giants at Avaya Stadium.

Scores were level at half-time following Didier Drogba's equaliser at the third time of asking for Kaka and Co., cancelling out Joel Campbell's 11th-minute penalty.

The result ended the All-Stars' run of consecutive wins against European opposition, having upstaged Tottenham last year andBayern Munich in 2014.

Arsenal settled quickest of the two teams, unsurprising given the lack of cohesion and understanding between the All-Stars.

And while Giovani dos Santos forced Petr Cech into an early save, Arsenal took advantage of a disjointed back four, with Campbell stepping up to convert from the spot.

The Costa Rica international lobbed the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Andre Blake and was brought down by Laurent Ciman, before channelling his inner Simone Zaza as he shuffled toward the ball in a stuttered run-up and fired into the bottom corner of the net.

Mohamed Elneny almost doubled Arsenal's lead, forcing Blake into a fine finger-tip save approaching the half-hour mark, which eventually saw the withdrawal of All-Star pair Andrea Pirlo andDavid Villa due to their upcoming New York City commitments.

Kaka and his All-Stars, however, did manage to draw level thanks to Drogba on the stroke of half-time.

After receiving a throughball from Dos Santos, Drogba bundled the ball into the back of the net after his initial shot was saved by Cech and blocked on the line.

Xhaka came off the bench at half-time to make his debut for the Londoners, the Switzerland international looking composed on the ball in midfield, forcing David Bingham into two saves.

All-Star substitutes Cyle Larin and Chris Wondolowski almost combined for the match-winner in the 82nd minute, but Arsenal snatched the victory three minutes from time via Akpom.

Why I might step away from government - Amaechi

Amaechi denied allegations levelled against him by his successor in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, that he received over N3.1 trillion during his tenure.

Rotimi Amaechi Today

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi has said that he might put his political career on hold after serving his current ministerial term.

Lamenting what he described as “deliberate attempt” to link public office holders to corruption, Amaechi said he did not steal money from the Rivers State treasury throughout his term as governor.

The Minister, who stated this at a meeting on corruption organised by the ministry of justice, denied allegations levelled against him by his successor, Nyesom Wike, that he received over N3.1 trillion during his tenure.

“I feel that after this ministerial appointment, I should do everything possible to stay away from government because in spite of all the forms of transparency I introduced in government, one man could begin to tell lies to Nigerians and Nigerians believe him,” he said.

“The governor of Rivers state said I squandered N3 trillion. I did not receive up to N1.8 trillion as governor both from IGR and funds from federal allocation. So, how could I have squandered money I did not even receive in the first place? You can see the politics of lies and lies.”

Amaechi said he prioritised transparency when it came to public funds during his administration, adding that he ensured the people of Rivers were periodically briefed on how funds were being spent.

He said under him as governor, the state became the first to implement the bureau of public procurement (BPP) act.

He added: “If you had followed the Rivers state government when I was governor, we were the first state to introduce the public procurement law in the country. The state cabinet used to call the director-general of public procurement in the state as an alternative governor, that they wanted an amendment to that law,” he said.

“The reason they wanted amendment is that he (DG) refused to increase the threshold to one hundred million naira, per ministry, instead he reduced it to 10 million naira.

“I had a battle with him (DG BPE) and the world bank who insisted that we should not go for an amendment but should persuade him to increase the threshold. I remember the cabinet tried to go to court against him and I remember that he was also trying to go to court against commissioners.

“In fact, the procurement DG wrote a memo that I felt was very incriminating requesting that since the law requires the governor to take any commissioner who doesn’t comply with the public procurement law to court, I should please take the commissioner of education to court for not complying… Everybody in the cabinet felt that he was an alternative governor, they felt that he was slowing the process.”

Amaechi and Wike had on Tuesday, July 26 entered into apeace deal brokered by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Alhaji Musa Daura, to allow a violence-free rerun legislative election in Rivers.
