Around 6, 500 migrants were rescued on Monday morning, August 29th from more than 40 fishing boats by members of Proactiva Open Arms NGO, Doctors Without Borders, Italian Coast Guard personnel and several partner agencies about 13 miles north of Sabratha, Libya.
The series of rescue mission, which was captured on video shows the desperate migrants, most of them from Eritrea and Somalia, jumping into the water from a crowded wooden boat to swim to the coast guard vessels and others cheering as babies and children are carried on to the rescue ships.
According to AP, the migrants knew the small boats they used to cross the Mediterranean were too weal to make the trip, but left anyway, with the hopes of making it to the rescue boats, which were waiting just about 20 kilometres out of to sea. Among those rescued is a 5-day old and its twin.

Jose Mourinho gives Zlatan four days off while other players get two
Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has played every minute of Manchester United's three games so far has been given four days of rest by Jose Mourinho while other players get just two. Mourinho put this down to the talismanic striker's age saying he needs more time to rest and recover.
'You cannot play 70 matches a season. So I give the other guys, who are not selected for the national teams, two days - and I give four days to Zlatan.' Mourinho said.
'At 34 years old, you need to rest. I give holidays a la carte. It depends on the situation. And he is playing every match, every minute. So four matches, he played 360 minutes - four days off for the big guy.'
With four goals in four games, Zlatan certainly doesn't look his age on the pitch and the red half of Manchester will be counting on him to take down derby rivals, Manchester City when the premier league resumes on September 10th.

Britain's youngest rapist: 11 year old boy sentenced for raping his younger sister and ejaculating in shocking court case
An 11 year old boy, now 12, was sentenced last week after being convicted of raping his younger sister onFebruary 26 and March 8 this year.
According to court documents, the boy who can't be named for legal reasons, was said to have ejaculated at least once during the sexual assaults and is now officially Britain's youngest rapist.
The boy, who is from Plymouth in Devon but now lives in Cornwall, was found with disturbing images on his mobile phone following the sexual assaults.
He was sentenced to a 12-month intensive referral order and put on the sex offenders’ register for two–and-a-half years..
According to the judge who sentenced him, he'll work with sex experts to improve his behavior and will also be supervised using the internet.
Judge Diane Baker told the young boy
I know a lot about what has happened in your life and your mum’s life in the past and the difficulties you faced and the confusion you face now about how you wish to lead your life. But what you did was so serious and so damaging to your little sister. She was nine-years-old – she does not understand about those things and you hurt her so seriously that that will last with her for the whole of her life. If you were older, I’m telling you now you would be serving a sentence of detention – that’s like prison. But you were only 11.”
Judge Baker also said that she wanted social services to make sure the boy had access to “male influences in his life”.
She said to him:
“Do you promise me that you’re going to work with everybody and this is not going to happen again? How do you feel about going back to school?”
The boy, who spoke in a quiet, mumbled tone, replied:
“I’m happy to go back to school and make friends.”
The judge added:
“I know it must be tough for you not to see your brothers and sisters but that’s going to have to remain until it’s safe.”
She told him he would have to carry out the intensive referral order or come back to court.
She asked him:
“If you don’t do it, what do you think will happen?” The boy – who had to be told to speak up by the judge – replied: “I don’t know.”
The judge said:
“They will say you will have to go back in front of Judge Baker – and that’s me. I need to know what’s happening with this order and I need to know your behaviour is improving.”
Jodie Leonard, defending counsel, said:
“He is due to start at school again – I asked him how he is getting on. He is working really hard.”

Photo: Frustrated man tries to commit suicide at Mile 2 River
The unidentified man pictured above on the stretcher, tried to commit suicide at the Mile 2 river in Amuwo Odofin area in Lagos state yesterday. The Sun reports that eyewitnesses claim that the man who appears to be in his 40s, had muttered some words in Ibo and then plunged into the river.
The timely intervention of a passing speedboat prevented him from drowning after passengers on the speedboat dived into the river and dragged the man to the riverbank.
One of the eyewitnesses who gave his name as Andy Odiaka, said the victim, who wore native clothes was speaking to himself just before he plunged into the river
“I was there on the bridge where the man was also standing. He was speaking to himself. He said he had no transport fare to move from one place to another. He said his suffering was too much that he could hardly feed. I also heard him saying life was meaningless to him. He mentioned Buhari many times, and the next thing I saw, the man jumped from the bridge into the water. He is an Igbo man because he was speaking the language. I thought he was joking when he said he was tired of everything around him. If not for a speedboat that was passing, he would have died. The boat stopped and the passengers dragged him to the riverbank and they continued their journey. Thereafter, nobody was ready to assist him. People simply looked at him, expressed sympathy and continued their journey. I have to call an emergency number” he said.Odiaka said men of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) later came in to rescue the man. When the victim’s pockets were searched for any means identity, only N90 was found on him.

Irate youths stab Catholic Priest, beat him to a state of coma in Anambra
Irate Youths said to be Idol worshipers, yesterday attacked a Priest, Rev. Father Fidelis Ifeanyichukwu Ugozo of the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Ugbenu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, beating him to a state of coma and then stabbing him in the face and other parts of his body.
According to residents of the community, the priest and some of his followers were carrying out the ‘Blessed Sacrament’ procession around some of the villages when they were stopped by one of the youth leader in Obubo village in Ugbenu town, Gabriel Ikegbunam, who felt the clergy man and his followers who were also performing their monthly rosary procession, were out to burn down their deity.
“Mr. Ikegbunem insisted that they will not enter his village named Obubo and when they overpowered him, he started making contacts, calling some youths from the village to attack the priest and others who were mainly women and children"he told ABS newsThe Catholic priest after the attack was rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ebenebe but due to his comatose state, he was transferred to St. Joseph’s hospital, Adazi Ani by the Ebenebe Deanery Chaplain.
A former catechist at St. Raphael’s parish Ugbenu, Cletus Nwankwo, said Obubo village is known in Ugbenu town for adulterous acts, adding that the youths suspected that the Rosary procession was aimed at destroying their deity shrine.
“They moved from Agueke village to Obiagu and decided to branch at Obubo before Ikegbunam blocked them and in the process, he called some of them and told them that Catholics are coming to burn their shrine. Soon the youths trooped out, wielding dangerous weapons such as axe, gun and machetes. They grabbed the Blessed Sacrament from our Parish Priest, hit it on the floor and used the Monstrance to hit our Parish priest on his hand before stabbing him on the face and other parts of the body” he said. The Traditional ruler of Ugbenu town, Igwe Lawrence Egwuonu, whose wife, Lolo Egwuonwu was also battered by the youths, said that Gabriel Ikegbunam, Israel Egwu and two others stormed his palace before the incident occurred to complain that their shrine and other sacred symbols were burnt by Christians.
“After investigation I discovered that they were all liars. None of their shrines were burnt and I can defend it anywhere. It was Ikegbunam that incited others to attack the priest and other Christians. There greatest mistake was touching the priest and destroying the Blessed Sacrament. It is a sacrilege and they will pay for it,” he said. Two of the rampaging youths Anthony Anigbogu and Humphrey Ekwenye, have been arrested and are currently in the custody of the State CID, Awka, while other accomplices are still at large.

Why suspects beg judges to remand them in our cells -EFCC shares interior of their holding cell (photos)
Press statement from antigraft agency EFCC.
A certain kind of drama almost always plays out when EFCC arraigns an accused person in court. The defence counsel would immediately apply for court bail. However, if the court temporarily denies the application, the counsel would again rise in open court and passionately plead with the trial judge to allow his client remain in EFCC holding facility, pending the determination of bail, or, where his application was granted, pending fulfilment of bail conditions.
Notwithstanding this, some people with ulterior motives have continuously sponsored false stories likening detention in EFCC facilities to being held in dungeons where torture and other forms of human rights abuses are commonplace.
The Commission however prides itself as meeting the highest possible professional standards in all its operations. Such unprofessional practices are not only outlawed in EFCC, they are regarded as criminal and anyone who engages in them, risks severe sanctions, including administrative reprimand and criminal prosecution.
EFCC has arguably, the best holding facilities of all law enforcement and security agencies in Nigeria. To prove this to sceptics, Commission on Thursday, 25th August, 2016, threw its facilities in Abuja, open for inspection by journalists from all media persuasions, including those who had unwittingly helped to propagate false notions about detention in the EFCC.
The media men saw things firsthand and freely interacted and conducted interview with suspects of their own choosing. They also toured the clinic attached to the cells, fully manned and run 24 hours round-the-clock by two qualified medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Among the other medical and diagnostic facilities, is a dedicated ambulance. The journalists also saw the meals served the suspects, which are sourced from the EFCC Staff Canteen. Those who prefer relatives to bring their meals from home, are so obliged. At the end of the tour, one reporter described the detention facilities as ‘A guest house for the big boys’.
Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, however threw a challenge to the reporters:
"If anyone of you think all these have been arranged, you are welcome to come at anytime you chose, to spend time with us and see for yourself (you can even spend some days in the cell); see how EFCC carries out investigation, arrest, interrogation and if you want, be detained as long as you say, in any of our facilities across the country. You don't need to give us prior notice of your coming. You can even arrange it as a group of reporters if you don't want to come alone."
He must be truly confident in EFCC's detention facilities. The over 30 journalists drawn from print, electronic and online platforms, said they would seriously consider the offer.
